Week 7

Dear Parents and Students,

Our four-day week was certainly a busy one! among other things, we had our first emergency drill for the year, and I am pleased to report that all students were out of the building in next to no time. Well done, everyone, on being so orderly and organised.

Maths
In Maths, we have been working through Topic 4, and reviewing what we know about division. We will review the topic once more on Monday, with the Topic Test to take place on Tuesday. A cumulative test and a benchmark test will take place the following week, before we begin Topic 5.

Literacy Workshop
We spent this week presenting our Personal Narratives. It has been interesting and entertaining to listen to one another’s stories. Next week, we will spend Monday and Tuesday reading some mystery stories from our Reading text. We are also continuing our study of nouns in our grammar lessons, which will continue next week.

Science
We held our Earth Science unit test on Friday, and we have our field trip on Wednesday. The following week, we will review what we know about the water cycle, and this will bring the unit to a close.

Social Studies
We had our chapter test on Thursday, which brought our study of geography and climate to a close for the time being. We will move our attention to citizenship next week, and then after the break, we will discuss our upcoming minor presentation assignment about patriotism.

Other important information
As you know, next week is only three days long, with our 10/10 holiday beginning on Thursday. School will reopen the following Monday, October 14. On Wednesday, we have our field trip. Clubs will be on as usual on Wednesday. These and other important dates are listed below.

Homework, Thursday, 3rd October

Maths: Practice 4-3 Special Quotients; Enrichment 4-3
Science: Review Chapter 6 - test tomorrow
Literacy: Achieve 3000 - That's My Jam - Make sure you have given a complete response to the thought question.

A quick recap on dividing by zero:
The inverse operation for
n ÷ x = q    is:
q × x = n

so  if         n = 6
and           x = 3
then          q = 2

                 n ÷ x = q
so: if         6 ÷ 3 = 2 , the inverse operation would then be:
  2 × 3 = 6
  q × x = n

BUT if n = 7 and x = 0, as in
  7 ÷ 0
(n ÷ x)  that would suggest that the inverse operation is:
 q × 0 = 7
(q × x = n)

if q = 7, then it would read
7 × 0 = 7, which is false.

Zero cannot divide a number.

Week 6

Dear Parents and Students,

It seems that autumn has finally arrived, and we can enjoy some cooler weather. As the temperature tends to fluctuate at this time of year, we should all be vigilant in making sure we have suitable clothes for the changing conditions. The weather may be changing, but in the classroom, we have been busy, as usual.

Maths
We completed Topic 3, and held the test Friday. Next week, we will begin Topic 4, which is dedicated to division. The test for Topic 4 will take place on Tuesday, the week after next.

Literacy Workshop
We have spent most of our time working on our Personal Narrative stories, and we completed publishing them on Friday. Next week, we will take turns reading our stories aloud to the class. As we have such a large class, this will take place over several days. In grammar, we are continuing with nouns, and our current spelling list is dedicated to homophones. Our Spelling test will take place on Tuesday, as usual.

Science
We have all but completed our studies of the Earth in Science. Next week, we will review what we have studied in our Mystery Science investigations, and we will have a small test on that material on Friday.  We will also spend some time studying the water cycle and water as a natural resource. The following week, of course, we will have our visit to the Taichung Earthquake Museum.

Social Studies
We have been focusing on natural resources, which has fitted in well with our discussions of Global Awareness. Next week, we will review all we have studied over the past few weeks, and a minor test will take place on Thursday. Pictures of our Global Awareness Week activities can be seen via the link at the end of this post.
